How to hammer a nail in a tight space

This looks impossible! — Perkins Builder Brothers

When hammering in a tight space looks impossible

What do you do if you can’t hit a nail in a tight space with a hammer because something is in the way? What if that something is a 2×4 and the nail is attached to a switch or outlet box? If you don’t have enough space to fit a palm nailer (yep, that one’s battery powered), the Perkins Builder Brothers are extremely resourceful and have a simple solution that electricians have been doing since their first day on the job!

The tools you need to drive nails in close quarters:

  1. A sturdy Flathead screwdriver or Flat bar
  2. A good pair of Linesman’s pliers
  3. A solid Straight-Claw hammer

Nail in a tight space with these steps:

  1. Grab a trusty flathead screwdriver or flat bar
  2. Wedge the driver tip between the 2×4 and the nail head
  3. Push the screwdriver’s shaft against the 2×4 and use it like a lever to start driving the nail in
  4. Stick your Linesman’s pliers between the 2×4 and the nail head when there’s enough space
  5. Grab a hammer and strike the Linesman’s around the side cutter
  6. Don’t bust your box
  7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 until the nail has been fully seated
